Absolutely spectacular view from the top bell tower. If you get the chance (and they still let people up there) do climb the stairs, it is so worth it. Each time I have been to this beautiful city, I am enchanted by this church complex.

On the 22nd of May 1856 Russian businessman and art collector Pavel Mikhaylovich Tretyakov purchases The Temptation, a painting by Russian painter Nikolay Gustavovich Shilder. The painting was the first of his collection and became the starting point for the Tretyakov Gallery, housing one of the most complete Russian art collections.

Victoria Day celebrates Queen Victoria’s birthday, which is May 24. While the Queen’s birthday was celebrated in Canada long before confederation, in 1901 (following her death) the day was made a federal holiday.We celebrate Queen Victoria’s birthday, and not those of other sovereigns, because Victoria was queen during confederation in 1867. She is referred to as the “Mother of Confederation”.
